Start with a file, or try an example

Select Choose a file or drop one onto the desk. The three built-in examples are synthetic and let you try a table, an archive directory and unfamiliar bytes. No sign-up or payment is needed. Your original file is unchanged.

The desk accepts one file at a time, up to 20 MiB. Use a current browser that supports JavaScript and web workers. If inspection stops, choose a smaller file or reload and try again.

What can I see?

Text is displayed literally. CSV/TSV becomes searchable rows; JSON becomes an expandable tree; ZIP and supported Office packages show directory information without extracting files. PNG/JPEG image previews are optional. Other files show byte clues, readable fragments and a detected format when recognized.

Previews are bounded: large tables, text, trees and archive lists may be incomplete. PDF and SQLite headers can be recognized, but this version does not decode their contents. Encrypted, damaged or unfamiliar formats may not have a useful preview. The readout explains what was and wasn’t inspected.

Does “identified” mean safe?

No. Security status is “Not assessed.” File Room does not run executables, scan for malware, sanitize documents, certify safety or inspect USB hardware. An unfamiliar extension alone does not prove malice. A fingerprint identifies bytes, not safety. Browser processing and a worker are not a hardened malware sandbox.

Below the results, open “Need a copy of these results?” and request an unsigned local report. Download it only if you want to retain it. Nothing is sent to DVC. See how your data is handled.
